Pizza in the middle of the Indian Ocean – Vapiano on La Réunion
Looking for an exotic holiday destination with fascinating natural scenery, picture perfect beaches and your favourite pizza or pasta dishes? Then La Réunion is for you!
Let’s look at the facts. Since 2010, this volcanic island in the middle of the Indian Ocean has been listed as a UNESO World Heritage Site. It’s been in French hands since the 17th century so the official language is French. It’s a ten hour flight away, either direct from Paris or with a stopover in neighbouring Mauritius. Yes, it’s a long journey but it’s so worth it. Promise.
(Almost) anything goes on La Réunion
Sun worshippers can relax under palm trees on one of the island’s breathtaking beaches before cooling off in the azure blue sea, but active visitors are spoilt for choice too. How about hiking to the crater of Piton de la Fournaise, one of the world’s most active volcanoes? Or exploring the volcanic, rain-forested interior on a mountain bike? The Indian Ocean is a paradise for diving, snorkelling and sport fishing, but if you prefer to keep your feet on dry land, why not take a trip to one of the many colourful local markets.
Wildlife enthusiasts can watch whales and dolphins from the coastal road, or marvel at the lush, tropical foliage at one of the island’s five botanical gardens.
Culture vultures should head to the museums to discover more about the island’s history and economy, from sugarcane, vanilla, curcuma and rum to shipbuilding, agriculture and astronomy.
Pasta on the beach – easy on La Réunion
After the first Vapiano opened in the island’s capital St Denis four years ago, a second has now been launched in a very special location: on the beach in St Pierre!
And because the temperature rarely drops below 18 degrees south of the equator (even in the winter months July and August) there’s an outdoor pizza oven beneath palm trees on the terrace. The set-up inside however is pleasingly familiar with four pasta stations, a pizza and salad station and another bar. And outdoors there’s a beach bar where you can relax with a chilled drink, bury your toes in the warm sand and gaze at the twinkling ocean. Send us a postcard!
