New Year’s Eve – seven of Germany’s best firework displays

What shall we do for New Year’s Eve is the big question everyone’s asking at this time of year. If it’s fireworks you’re after, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite seven displays in Germany. All together now – Ooh! Aah!

Berlin: the biggie

As the country’s capital, Berlin attracts tourists from all over the world, especially over the holidays. And they’re rarely disappointed. Party people should head to the Brandenburg Gate to enjoy a spectacular firework display above an epic backdrop. 100% Insta-worthy.

Hamburg: sail away with me

The fireworks over the harbour in Germany’s second city are breathtaking, but the area gets incredibly busy. Avoid the crowds by watching the display from the river Elbe instead of on its banks. Book a boat tour for unforgettable views of Hamburg when the clock strikes twelve.

Dresden: hipster hot spot

Dresden is one of Germany’s up and coming cities. It’s steeped in history, so naturally all the action takes place around the old Theaterplatz square, the Semper opera house, the cathedral and the Zwinger Palace. You’ll be treated to live music, a huge selection of food and drink stalls and an impressive firework display.

Munich: hike up high

There are a number of spots to enjoy the fireworks in Bavaria’s capital. The most popular is Marienplatz, the large square in front of the Town Hall, but if you grab a spot along the Hacker Bridge you’ll also enjoy fantastic views. Our favourite secret spot is at the top of the Olympic Mountain where the panorama stretches all the way to the Alps.

Frankfurt: for high-flyers

The best place to watch the fireworks in Germany’s finance hub is along the banks of the river Main or from one of its many bridges. If temperatures plummet, head to one of Frankfurt’s smart skyscraper bars to welcome the New Year in style. Cheers!

Lake Constance: push the boat out

Lake Constance in Southern Germany is the perfect spot for a romantic trip on New Year’s Eve. But if you’re hoping for secluded serenity and a peaceful start to the New Year, think again. The lake is packed with brightly lit party boats, all waiting for the big show at midnight. Full steam ahead!

Cologne: something for everyone

If you’re not a fan of crowds, the best place to watch Cologne’s fireworks is along the banks of the river Rhine. There’s music and entertainment in the area around Cologne’s famous cathedral for those in the mood to party. Locals often line the bridges across the river so expect road closures. Once the fireworks are over, head to one of Cologne’s many bars or clubs.
